Elder Scott's Talk at BYU Marriot Center

Elder Scott Devotional March 18, 2008 at BYU: These were my notes from the devotional.
Love for each of us and knows what we can accomplish in our lives. What we are capable of.
Message of Lasting Value to me. As if speaking to me individually
Many times you may feel overwhelmed with those around you.
My message that can help you now in your lives. 2 Parts: Scriptural Principles and then a more significant experience. I promise that as you seek to identify it , you will have a greater message. It will come from the spirit. That direction from the spirit is of the highest priority as to what you should remember.
There is SO much knowledge available to us via the scriptures, that the Lord’s Prophets have been given.
1. Alma 7:23 Humble, easily entreated, etc.
a. This is an extremely successful formula of success in this life.
i. Ye should be humble
1. Willing the apply the lessons that are learned.
2. An essential ingredient of strong character
ii. Be submissive and gentle
1. Stubbornness is a barrier to spiritual guidance.
2. We need to be gentle in our relationships (no harsh words)
iii. Easy to be entreatedBe willing to take counsel in any area of your life, and you will see that many problems that are unnecessary will be avoided.
i. Be Temperate in all things
1. Do not be excessive (Imp: Internet, Movies, whatever)
2. Do not be wishy washy
ii. Diligent in keeping commandments of God at all times.
1. Diligence=at all times. Diligence is not just a one time event, it is a process.
a. You cannot pick and choose commandments, you must be true to all the laws of the Lord.
iii. Ask for the things you stand in need of
b. BY FULFILLING THESE REQUIREMENTS, you will be better qualified to receive the Lord’s response.
c. BUT ALWAYS give thanks back to God
i. God is not pleased with those that do not recognize His hand in all things.
2. ***I PROMISE THAT IF YOU WILL FOLLOW THESE TEACHINGS< THEY WILL YIELD THE GREATEST LEARNING AND CAPACITY THAN ANY OTHER THING
3. IMP: Listen to my wife’s words to get me to be busy and to work and study hard. Then the LSAT is in my grasp. Stop work after the semester ends. Go forward.
4. IMP: WATCH CONFERENCE AND BECOME a HUNGERER AND THIRSTER AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS.
5. IMP: READ THE SCRIPTURES MORE DILIGENTLY< SO THAT YOU ARE STUDYING THEM DAILY.RESOLVE TO EVER LIVE IN RIGHTEOUSNESS
1. LET THE ATONEMENT BECOME THE SURVE FOUNDATION UPON WHICH YOUR LIVE WILL BALANCE.
2. As the world grows more wicked, the base of the atonement in your life will hold you up and bring confidence in times of trials.
3. I invite you to create a personal plan that will allow you to establish that base of the atonement
a. Deep, personal pondering of the scriptures
b. Meaningful service.
c. Whatever path you follow, make it an undeviating goal to create a deep and abiding base of the atonement before leaving the University. You may think that it is impossible with everything else. I testify as an apostle, that your attaining that base in the atonement will enhance ALL of your skills of learning more than anything else. (IMP: I NEED TO IMPROVE. I CAN IMPROVE) Do those things that the Father and the Son will be proud of.
d. The Savior sensed an enormous sense of responsibility. (I Need to feel that also in order for me to improve and do better. I have a family waiting and leaning on me.)
e. In his absolute agony, he felt EVERY feeling from any transgression, even the most vile.
f. He had to stand up to the temptations of the adversary.
g. At the time that he most needed the Father, the Father had to back away. He had to do it completely alone.
h. God and the Savior live and they love us and they will make it so that you can be more obedient.
